Parental leave

Parents who have been employed for at least one year are entitled to up to 13 weeks unpaid parental leave before their child’s fifth birthday to enable them look after their children.

If they have a disabled child this increases to 18 weeks to be taken before the child’s eighteenth birthday.

Leave can only be taken in ‘blocks’ of one week at a time – so could not be used for example to cover a school closure day unless the parent takes a full week off.
